1907–08 Stoke F.C. season
The 1907–08 season was Stoke's 20th season of league football and first in the Second Division.
Overview
The 1907–08 season saw Stoke playing in the Second Division for the first time and they started the season poorly losing four matches in September. They quickly dropped into the bottom two although results did pick up Stoke finished in a poor 10th place which was their highest position of the season.
Stoke were very inconsistent beating teams 6–1 and 5–0 one week then being beat by the same scoreline the next. Stoke did produce some rare quality such as a 6–1 victory over Fulham which was regarded as one of the best attacking displays ever produced by a Stoke team according to the Athletic News.
In the FA Cup Stoke made it to the fourth round before being knocked out by Wolverhampton Wanderers in front of 31,000 fans. However after the being knocked out of the cup the fans deserted the team and crowds plummeted alarmingly and gate receipts only made around £40. Stoke made a loss of £1000 during the season meaning that many players left the club to find employment elsewhere and others were sold on the cheap.
Chairman Cowlishaw tried desperately to acquire the needed funds but failed and he immediately pulled Stoke out of the Football League and put the club into Liquidation. A new Board was installed and a new chairman Rev. A Hurst took over, Stoke applied for re-election and did manage to get on the voting paper but Stoke only managed to get six votes while Tottenham Hotspur claimed seventeen.
The news board placed Stoke in the Birmingham & District League for the following season where Stoke would attempt to rebuild.
